Each week, GECH hosts several classes, ranging from music groups to church services. This week we’ve spoken to members of Busy Fingers, a craft group on Thursdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, to learn more about the class and what they enjoy about GECH.
About Your Group
“Can you tell us a little about your group and what you do?”
We are a craft group that meets on Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm. We bring our projects, have a chat, and lots of laughs over coffee.
“How did the group get started, and what inspired it?”
The group was started at the end of 2012 in the smallest room at GECH, but grew over time to approximately 26 people.
“What is the main purpose or mission of your group?”
The purpose was to keep these crafts alive and come together as a group.
Impact on the Community
“Why do you think spaces like this are important in West Auckland?”
Having a space like GECH supports small social groups and is affordable to all.
“How does your group support wellbeing, social connection, or lifelong learning in the community?”
Being able to come together to enjoy a shared interest and have fun while doing so absolutely supports all those things, yes!
Experience Using the Venue / Facilities
“How do you use the space during your sessions/events?”
We sit around tables in the middle of the room so everyone can come together to knit, crochet, quilt, or whatever they are doing.
“What do your members say about the location and accessibility in Glen Eden?”
The park is lovely, with good views, and it’s easily accessible from Glen Eden.
Group Specific
“What skills do people learn or develop in your group?”
All sorts of new crafting skills are learnt from one another, as well as social skills.
“How do your sessions foster creativity/confidence/wellbeing?”
The ability to try a different way of doing things in a relaxed atmosphere.
“What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining?”
Come along with a sense of humour!
“What is the most rewarding part of running these sessions?”
Seeing what everyone is doing each time they come, and the progress they make.
“What kinds of friendships or support networks form here?”
It’s a welcoming and supportive environment. We have fun and help each other.
Invitation to the Community
“Who would you encourage to join?”
Anyone who is interested in crafts!
“What should new visitors expect at their first session?”
You’ll be welcomed by the group – It’s a nice social environment.
“How can people find out more about upcoming events or classes?”
Turn up on a Thursday between 10 am and 2 pm, or reach out to GECH so they can connect you with a member of the group.
